Michael Karkoc is a 94-year-old man who has quietly lived over half his life in Minnesota. Karkoc is accused of being an SS Commander and leading the SS-led Ukrainian Self Defense Legion, an organization whose members massacred civilians and resistance fighters throughout Ukraine and Poland and helped suppress the Warsaw Uprising. It is also alleged that he lied to immigration authorities when he came to the United States in 1949.
Supporting the rebels in Syria has become a noble, and justifiable, cause since, as reported, the Syrian government ‘crossed the line’ when they used chemical weapons on their own people. And please note, if you don’t remember, that the use of chemical weapons by Saddam Hussein was one of the atrocities which was used as justification for the 2003 invasion of Iraq.
Of course we all agree that Hitler and the SS were madmen and had to be stopped. Of course the government of President Bashar al-Assad has overstepped the morality deemed reasonable by any sane standards as he attempts to put down the revolt in Syria.
Please note I am not passing judgment and, after working and traveling all over the world for the past 20 years, I am attempting to be as objective and honest in my approach to this as possible. But I do have a few questions for you. For example: How many people have died throughout the world as a result of covert actions taken by the American government? How many democratically leaders have been overthrown (Chile, Guatemala, Honduras, Iran, Haiti, Panama, et al) and replaced by a right wing dictators who killed and tortured millions, which in the process, allowed politically well-connected American corporations to profit in billions as these Third World countries were destroyed? How many democratically elected leaders in Third World countries have been assassinated to protect the interests of corporate America? (Ecuador, Panama, Chile, et al) And one other question I wish to ask is this: Did the US military use White Phosphorous, a chemical weapon, against the people of Fallujah in Iraq during the Iraq war? There is a substantial amount of evidence that supports this allegation, but please do not take my word for it. Do your own homework.
The point of this exercise is, of course, simple: Why is it acceptable for the American military to kill millions of people, when 65 years later, we can’t find a way to forgive a 94-year-old man for his past indiscretions, realizing of course that what Hitler did was an atrocity. There were over one million civilian casualties in Iraq, which we rarely ever hear discussed. Nor do we ever talk about the fact that Halliburton is making a fortune off of Iraqi oil, but perhaps you consider Halliburton’s significant presence in the hugs Iraqi oilfield to be a coincidence.
Israel and the United States are both major weapons manufacturers. The more bloodshed in this world the more money they make. In fact, a recent quote I heard was that of an Israeli business man smiling as he lamented, “We are very good at turning blood into money.” Of course the problem is that little of the blood spilled is theirs.
Ultimately, I ask you if it is the goal of the US – Israel pact to control the world. A representative of the US military once told me in a very frank discussion that the real goal of the US military is to sell weapons and control the world’s supply of oil and drugs. And after being on the ground in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Columbia I would suggest they are doing a very good job. The same man, when I asked him about ‘freedom and democracy’ only laughed at the naivete of my question. Apparently he had never watched Bush, Cheney, or Obama on television selling the ‘notion’ of freedom and democracy to the American public. That particular version of the ‘truth’ comes out before the invasion.
I apologize for my cynicism but when one follows the money the fact that the American people have been duped and the people of the Third World have died so a few can profit. I ask you into whose pockets does the profit from the sale of weapons, oil, and drugs go? Whose campaigns did they contribute to? (Sorry, that information is not for disclosure.) The taxpayer is on the hook for a $550 billion defense budget, but the profit goes where? We invade countries to control their oil and the profit goes where? Afghanistan witnesses a huge increase in opium production since the invasion and the profit goes where? (Incidentally many major US cities are experiencing a flood of very cheap heroin on their streets which, apparently, is coming out of Afghanistan.)
So while corporations, supported by our governments, make billions creating, and selling war, (weapons sales would go in the toilet if there was peace) it is the people who pay. We pay with our tax dollars. We pay with the lives of our children. And we pay, when we get very honest with ourselves, with our souls due to the destruction which has occurred in our name as we stood back in silence.
There were, no doubt, thousands of Germans who watched in silence as the Third Reich grew more and more insane in their attempts to destroy the Jewish people. There were, no doubt, thousands more who looked the other way feeling helpless and not wishing to see the truth of what was happening around them. Subsequently six millions Jews were murdered. And of course we blame Hitler, but what of the thousands, if not millions of accomplices who looked the other way. Are we not those people?
All I can say is God Bless Julian Assange, Bradley Manning, and Ed Snowden. The world doesn’t need more fools who are blinded by patriotism, it needs more honesty. It doesn’t need more jobs, or wealth, it needs more integrity. And whether you agree with these men or not looking the truth in the eye and doing the right thing is all about courage. And Seal Team Six were pussies compared to the courage I see in the soul of Bradley Manning.
So when you look at yourself and your country what do you see? Are you capable of being honest? Do you know the truth?
